SCLSID MSHS Sports Day

May 15,2023

Spring is an exciting season in the sports world! The Major League Baseball season has kicked off, the NHL and NBA playoffs are underway, the NFL draft is around the corner, but of course the premiere event of the season is the SCLSID MS/HS Sports Day!

Friday, April 21st was a chilly morning with overcast skies. But we felt sunshine on this cloudy day when it was cold outside near the month of May. I guess you’d say what can make me feel this way? ♫Sports Day (Sports Day) (Sports Day), talkin’ ‘bout Sports Day (Sports Day) Students and teachers showed up wearing their team shirts. In the Middle School, contenders included The Rumble Ponies, The Trash Pandas, The Fighting Camels, The Yard Goats, The Banana Slugs, and The Sea Unicorns. In the High School, we had The Flying Squirrels, The Disco Turkeys, The Beavers, and The Rubber Duckys. Dressed in this rainbow collection, it was a true “riot of color.”

Middle School

The Middle School Dodgeball Tournament consisted of a round-robin tourney in each of the gyms, with the two winners from each pool meeting in the finals to crown the champion. In the end it was the Fighting Camels who emerged victorious over the Yard Goats to claim to the grand prize.

After dodgeball, the Middle School students went outside for the soccer tournament. The matches were often neck-and-neck, with several close games that needed to be decided on penalties. The championship game between the Sea Unicorns and Rumble Ponies was no different: following a 0-0 score at the end of regulation time, the Sea Unicorns were able to edge out the Rumble Ponies 2-0 on penalties to win the championship.

The Middle School track events featured a 4 x 300 relay, girls 100 meter dash, and a boys 100 meter dash.

In the 4 x 300 relay, it was ironically the Banana Slugs who slid into 1st, the Yard Goats gobbled up 2nd, and the Rumble Ponies galloped onto the podium in 3rd.

The Girls 100 meter dash consisted of three heats with the top two from each heat advancing to the Finals. In the championship race, Brianna of the Rumble Ponies took home the gold, with Cherry from the Sea Unicorns and Mizuki from the Banana Slugs earning silver and bronze respectively.

The Boys 100 meter dash consisted of five heats, with the winner from each heat advancing to the championship race. Teddy from the Sea Unicorns raced to gold, followed closely by Ray from the Trash Pandas and Dustin from the Yard Goats with silver and bronze.

High School

The High School Sports Day kicked off with an Ultimate Frisbee tournament featuring two preliminary matches. The winner from each would earn the right to advance to the finals. In the championship, the Rubber Duckys squeaked out a victory against the Disco Turkeys in extra time to win the trophy.

The High School basketball tournament consisted of two preliminary matches, one game to determine 3rd and 4th place, and a final championship. In the 3rd-4th place match, the Rubber Duckys defeated the Beavers 29-20. The championship game between the Disco Turkeys and the Flying Squirrels came right down to the wire…twice. Two overtime periods were required before the Disco Turkeys were able to finally put away a feisty Flying Squirrels squad by a score of 33-29.

Running over to the 4 x 300 relay, the Flying Squirrels seemed poised to take home the gold, but Max of the Disco Turkeys had other plans, pulling ahead in the last 100 meters to finish comfortably atop the podium. The Flying Squirrels had to settle for silver, and the Rubber Duckys took bronze.

The Girls 100 meters only needed one championship race to determine a winner. Mina of the Flying Squirrels won the gold with Ella and Chloe, both proud Beavers, earning silver and bronze.

The Boys 100 meters was comprised of two heats, with the top three runners from each race advancing to the championship. In the final race, Rowan of the Flying Squirrels flew past the finish line to claim gold, with Richard of the Rubber Duckys squeaking out 2nd, and Anton of the Flying Squirrels finishing 3rd.

In between team tournaments and track events, our students also had a chance to engage in some informal games on the White House lawn.

Archery, volleyball, spikeball, golf, jump rope, cornhole, and sidewalk chalk were all on tap for students and teachers to try while enjoying the sunny weather that finally emerged in the afternoon.

A big thanks to everyone for participating. See you next year!
