Riot of Color Rewind

A riot of color burst after the strike of the gavel. All 43 delegates were unbelievably extraordinary in their ways of providing potential solutions to the topic of Refugees’ Access to Jobs and Financial Services.

The chairs were deeply astonished by the professionalism in diplomacy, negotiation, debate, and paper writing demonstrated by a delegation composed of mostly first-timers for MUN.

To the 67 participants at SCLSMUNC May 2023, you are the riot of color we’ve been waiting for.

What is MUN?

MUN stands for Model United Nations. At MUN, current global issues are discussed.

Participants simulate delegations at different conferences held by the United Nations and endeavor to find solutions to the topic at hand. MUN both inspires and informs more people about the urgent issues facing today’s youth.

SCLSMUN (Soong Ching Ling School Model United Nations) is an organization formed by a group of students aspiring to communicate their thoughts, solve current global issues, and change the world through hosting and attending MUN events!

Our Theme: Inside Out

As profound social animals, humans have never lacked the ability to exchange information. We converse day-to-day, and now there are more options for how you can get the process done: in person and online.

People say there are five major aspects of communication: asking, informing, listening, sharing, and adding. These all sum up to one vague yet particular and familiar subject: life. We communicate about our lives more frequently and in greater depth as our daily interactions expand. Boundaries are lost frequently. Especially for teenagers in adolescence who think someone they have known for only 2 days gets them and, therefore, they share everything with them.

Oftentimes, “the inner self,” which is incomparably personal, is leaked out through casual conversation without even noticing it. Once this side is revealed, a person might completely crumble. As if everything has turned inside out, your inside is exposed to the public, and the things or people you thought would never hurt you turn out to be the ones that make you ache the most.

How can we keep the “inside” inside? How can we keep the “out” out? How can we share based on security? How can we speak without hurting anyone?

Therefore, the 2nd SCLSMUN event will focus on the theme, Inside Out!

Topic: Improving Cybersecurity

“Privacy is not an option, and it shouldn’t be the price we accept for just getting on the internet.” —— Gary Kovacs

It is indisputable that using the internet is indispensable in our daily lives. However, the convenience it brings has a flip side: issues with privacy, online harassment, and cyberbullying, to name a few.

According to an international non-profit organization named DoSomething founded in 1993, about 37% of American teens between the ages of 12 and 17 have been the victims of online attacks, and of those, 30% have had it happen more than once.

There is no pattern to these attacks. They can occur for any reason linked to your identity or an opinion you've expressed online.

The question is, how can we balance the basic right of freedom of speech with people's privacy? What cybersecurity policies should be in place to ensure that we can enjoy the benefits of the internet while minimizing our exposure to potential harm?

Come explore this topic with us at SCLSMUNC December 2023, “Inside Out”.
