Five! Four! Three! Two! One! 2020 SCLS Science Fair of DDPS was kicked off with the cheers from the students when they saw their handmade water rockets flying into the sky.
Using recycled plastic bottles and cardboards, all fourth-grade students made their own water rockets. Through this DIY process, they had a better understanding of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’.
As a major part of the science fair, students from Grade 1 to Grade 5 did their own science experiments. Groups of four or five students must finish their experiments within a month. On the last day of the fair, they presented and shared their research process with other students and teachers on a display board.
Inspired by the call of 'putting an end to food wasting and promoting thrift', Liu Mufeng’s team decided to do some research about food spoilage and find out the best way to store food by doing fungi culture experiments on noodles. They kept recording fungi’s growth situation every day of the month and learned to observe fungi using microscope.
Pei Tingkang’s team made an intelligent walking stick for the aged by programing. They believe life will be more convenient with the help of science. During the experiment, they encountered various difficulties. Replacing the programing software, recoding, etc., they kept deliberating on the details until the last day before display. Their design of this walking stick perfectly showed ‘Science and technology are human oriented.’
YITU, one of the top AI companies of China, introduced various AI interactive devices into SCLS campus at this year's science fair. Student had so much fun when they interacted with the AI devices. May we have an AI driving system that makes our ride to school more comfortable? Can we install a face identification system that only allows specified students to enter a classroom for safety concerns due to the epidemic? The students started to think about the possibilities of future AI campus.
As President Xi Jinping remarked at the Leaders' Side Event on Safeguarding the Planet of the G20 Riyadh Summit, ‘The Earth is our shared home. We may follow the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind and pitch in to tackle climate and other environmental challenges and protect the blue planet.’ With more concerns about environmental protection raised, the students will know that keeping the harmony between humans and nature is vital to the future of mankind.
Combining knowledges of scientific technology, biology, astronomy etc., this year's science fair stimulated students' curiosity about science, improved their ability to do science research. And above all, it developed the students' responsibility to care about environment issues as well as the future of the Earth.
Let's protect our planet and create a green future together!
