近日,上海宋庆龄学校迎来了一位特别的客人——来自美国的儿童文学作家、教师及演讲者CA Scully。他不仅在中国生活和工作了十多年,深受中国文化与语言的启发,更创作了包括《麦奇历险记》系列和《彩虹贝壳》在内的十余本儿童读物。当孩子们得知他能用流利的中文交流时,无不惊叹不已。
SCLS recently welcomed U.S.-born author, teacher, and speaker, CA Scully, for a fun and engaging visit. Mr. Scully has lived and worked in China for over ten years and is inspired by its culture and language. He has written more than a dozen children’s books, including the Amazing Mind of Mikey series and The Rainbow Shell. Students were especially amazed that he can speak and communicate very well in Chinese.
创意混搭故事
“Smoosh Stories”
Mr. Scully led two sessions for different age groups. Students in Grades 1–2 enjoyed creating “smoosh stories” by mixing ideas from two books he shared. They came up with creative titles and used “What if…” questions to imagine new story ideas. It was exciting to see their creativity grow.
经典改编工坊
Changing Classic Tales
Students in Grades 3–5 also created smoosh stories and took it further by changing classic tales like Cinderella. Using “What if…” ideas, they suggested new characters, settings, and endings. The theatre was full of energy as students shared their ideas.
双语互动:错读中文的“小插曲”
Oops! A Bilingual Moment
The visit ended with Mr. Scully reading The Rainbow Shell. Students followed along and joined in when Chinese characters appeared. Mr. Scully playfully read them incorrectly, and students quickly corrected him, making it a fun and interactive experience. Having a bilingual author share the story also highlighted our students’ natural ability to translanguage with confidence and ease, moving between languages to deepen meaning and understanding together.
Throughout the sessions, students showed that creativity lives within every child and can be expressed in many ways—through English, Chinese, other languages, words, pictures, storytelling, and imagination.
小记者,大问题
Small Voices, Big Ideas
Students also asked questions about writing and becoming authors. Mr. Scully shared helpful tips and encouraged them to believe in their ideas.
“如果”,万千世界
What if, Endless Worlds
It was a wonderful visit, and we look forward to more opportunities to inspire a love of reading and writing in our students.
