Flying Together, Growing Together

Our 2026–2027 Staff Orientation and Induction

中文

Starting with Purpose

As we welcomed our teachers and non-academic staff back for the 2026–2027 academic year at Soong Ching Ling School International Division, our orientation and induction programs in both the Primary and Middle and High School divisions began together, reflecting our commitment to growing as one International Division community.

Our orientation was designed around a simple idea: we do our best work for children when we work well together.

This year’s theme in the Primary Division, The Dovey Way: Flying Together, Growing Together, provided a meaningful starting point. Our school mascot is a beautiful dove, and the theme invited us to consider who we are, what we value, and what we want our students to experience every day.

Our school Vision, To Give Children the Most Valuable Things, provided an important lens for our orientation. Our Mission reminds us that, in keeping with the values and philosophy espoused by Mme. Soong Ching Ling, we prepare our students to take their place in the world as global citizens. We respect the individual needs of children, foster a caring, creative, and inclusive environment, and nurture the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth of each child. These commitments provided a meaningful foundation for our learning together and a reminder of why our work matters.

One Community, One Direction

A particularly meaningful part of our orientation was bringing the Primary and Middle and High School teams together. As an International Division, we are on an important journey through our joint WASC and CIS accreditation process. It was important that everyone share an understanding not only of what the process involves, but also why it matters and where we are headed together.

Our accreditation update provided an opportunity to recognize the considerable work already completed, celebrate the efforts of our faculty and staff, and look ahead to the next stages of our journey. Staff were also introduced to some  International Division-wide initiatives emerging from our accreditation work. Together, these initiatives provide direction for our continued growth and help us translate our Mission and Vision into meaningful action.

Relationships Matter

Coming together also gave us an opportunity to strengthen relationships across divisions. Through mission-driven team-building activities connected to our school identity, Mission, Vision, and Dovey mascot, staff learned more about one another, shared experiences, and built connections beyond their immediate teams.

These moments mattered. Schools are built on relationships, and a strong sense of belonging among adults helps create a strong sense of belonging for students.

Growing Leaders, Growing Teams

Within our International Division, we emphasized developing our middle leaders and strengthening the capacity of our teachers and teams. Our leadership learning explored collective efficacy, drawing on the work of John Hattie and Jenni Donohoo and considering how leaders can create the conditions for teams to believe in their shared ability to make a meaningful difference for students.

Teachers and school leaders also engaged with Hattie’s Mindframes and Visible Learning, focusing on impact and considering how we can give children the most valuable learning experiences. We reflected on learning objectives, success criteria, feedback, and collective efficacy, with an emphasis on building trust, strengthening collaboration, and turning professional learning into action.

Giving Children the Most Valuable Things

Professional learning was deliberately connected to our priorities for the year ahead. New staff were introduced to our Mission, Vision, values, curriculum, systems, and approaches to teaching and learning, while returning staff moved into collaborative curriculum planning and classroom preparation.

For our new MS/HS teachers, orientation began with a focus on Understanding by Design (UbD). Through a series of workshops, teachers explored the difference between teaching for understanding and teaching for knowledge, with an emphasis on critical thinking, transferable skills, and deeper conceptual learning. Sessions on assessment encouraged teachers to consider how tasks can measure genuine understanding rather than recall alone. The week concluded with reflection on effective instructional planning and classroom practice.

As returning colleagues in MS/HS joined the following week, attention also turned to the Homeroom Program. Led by Sarah Tan, sessions invited teachers to reflect on the role of the Homeroom teacher in students’ lives and in creating a strong sense of belonging. Faculty explored the pastoral and relational dimensions of the role while developing a clearer understanding of the goals and activities that will support students throughout the year.

In the Primary Division, professional learning also placed a strong emphasis on social-emotional learning (SEL). Led by Mr. Martin Clinton, sessions invited teachers to deepen their understanding of our SEL curriculum and consider how we can intentionally support students’ social-emotional growth, wellbeing, relationships, and sense of belonging throughout the year.

One question anchored our thinking and perhaps captured the heart of our work better than any other:

What are the most valuable things we can give children?

Our conversations challenged us to think beyond programs and initiatives and focus on the experiences, relationships, opportunities, and learning we want every child to carry with them. More importantly, we considered how we will intentionally cultivate these through our classrooms, relationships, and collective work throughout the year.

Ready to Fly Together

As we begin this new school year, our focus is on how we will accomplish our school-wide goals together. We begin with a strong sense of purpose, a renewed commitment to one another, and a shared determination to fly together and give children the most valuable things.
