For its exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community, Shanghai Soong Ching Ling School International Division High School Student Council (SCLSID HSSC) has been recognized as a 2024 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC). This award recognizes student councils that maintain strong year-round programs and work to improve their schools and communities through their leadership activities. The NASC program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the leading professional organization for school leadership programs throughout the United States and beyond. Its student leadership programs involve over one million students worldwide.

Recap on HSSC Achievements

Since its founding in 2019, the student members of HSSC and their faculty sponsor, Susan Gotthelf, have strived to provide service to the school and greater community, through initiatives like the Charity Run to raise funds for children to continue their high school education, and the book donation project for children in Qinghai province. Within the school environment, we have created cherished community traditions such as the Halloween dance party, the holiday candy-cane sale, and the annual variety show. Following the NASC tenet of “amplifying student voice,” we launched the free period product initiative and annual Women’s Day exhibitions, inspiring students and teachers to reflect together on how to create a more equitable society. Our forums enable students to express their ideas constructively, contributing to meaningful dialogues.

Congratulations from NASSP CEO

“Receiving a National Gold Council of Excellence Award reflects the amazing dedication of the students and school to make their community a better place,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe, “Shanghai Soong Ching Ling School International Division High School Student Council has gone above and beyond in elevating student voice to ensure they are establishing a positive climate and culture, as well as fostering academic and social growth for all.”

Words from HSSC Leadership

This is the first year SCLS ID High School Student Council has been named a National Gold Council of Excellence, the only High School Student Council in China to receive the award. The application process was spearheaded by HSSC President Sophia Ji and Vice-President Rhema Tan.

"Witnessing HSSC's growth from four to 17 students, from only a few activities to diverse events, I am proud of the Council's perseverance to create positive changes on our campus and beyond despite all the challenges we encountered. Although I will soon graduate, the younger students' creativity and dedication reassure me that HSSC will continue to take meaningful and groundbreaking initiatives and inspire more students to join them to improve our community!"

––Sophia Ji

(President)

“It’s been a journey for SCLS ID HSSC, to see our efforts piece together like a puzzle— each unique yet fitting seamlessly into the bigger picture. Receiving recognition really is exhilarating; however, what makes me prouder is to see how far Student Council has come in just the past couple of years. There’s been so much exploring, experimenting, and juggling circumstances. Despite the set backs of COVID, we’ve really gotten back on a roll. Let’s keep it rolling!”

––Rhema Tan

(Vice-President)

“I am extremely proud of the way HSSC leads by example for the SCLS ID student body. Through their dedication, these students have created a positive change in the school environment, inspiring a community where every student can feel included, valued, and engaged. I am thrilled to see them receive the recognition they deserve. Great student councils are a feature of great schools.”

Congratulations to SCLSID HSSC for receiving the award! This is just the beginning, and we look forward to cultivating more service-oriented, dedicated, and innovative student leaders in the future to improve our campus and community together!

––Sophia Ji

––Rhema Tan
