Soong Ching Ling School Students’ Exchange Experience in Pasadena
”
A recent student exchange trip from SCLS to the United States proved to be an adventure filled with cultural exchange, personal growth, and unforgettable memories. During the October holiday, a group of five students from IDHS and six students from DDHS visited La Salle High School in Pasadena, California. The experience proved to be the perfect blend of education and cultural exploration, giving students the opportunity to learn about life in American schools and also to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world.
From the moment they arrived, the SCLS students were warmly welcomed by their host families from La Salle and introduced to the sunny landscapes and bustling neighborhoods of Pasadena. Each host family went above and beyond, helping students quickly adjust to their temporary home and creating a comforting sense of community that would support them throughout their visit.
Staying with host families allowed the students to experience Pasadena on a personal level, opening a window into the daily lives of local families. They shared meals, learned about American traditions, and even picked up some new phrases and expressions. The genuine kindness and hospitality of the host families made a lasting impression on the students, offering them not only a place to stay but also a second home.
At La Salle High School, SCLS students were welcomed with enthusiasm, and they were introduced to many of the school’s innovative learning programs. In the medical lab, they practiced surgical suturing using the same prosthetics that doctors and nurses use in their training. In the engineering lab, they saw how to program a laser cutter and a power mill to produce customized parts for engineering projects. In Chinese class, they helped to create an immersive language environment for their La Salle peers who had only just begun learning Chinese. By the end of the week, each student had gotten a unique look into academics at an American school.
The trip wasn’t just limited to school activities; students had the chance to explore some of Pasadena’s most iconic sites. In particular, students went to the famous Huntington Library, where they explored the facility’s numerous art museums and gardens. They also enjoyed a campus tour in the Claremont-McKenna college system, a group of 5 preeminent American liberal arts colleges. And of course, the students’ host families planned countless fun experiences for them: students played on the beach, went to water polo games, visited the Universal Studios theme park, sampled the food at IN-AND-OUT Burger, and much more.
Throughout their stay, SCLS students shared details about their own culture and school life, sparking engaging conversations with La Salle students and teachers. In return, La Salle students shared their own experiences, providing insight into American culture and traditions. The exchange of ideas and stories created a bridge between the two groups, fostering a sense of understanding and appreciation for their similarities and differences.
The SCLS student exchange trip to Pasadena was much more than an academic venture; it was an experience that encouraged personal growth, fostered curiosity, and deepened students’ understanding of the world. The experience helped students become more independent and adaptable, and it reinforced the importance of open-mindedness and empathy. Students saw that people from a much different school in a much different country still shared their desire to learn, connect, and grow. In this way, the exchange participants discovered new cultures, new friendships, and a little more about themselves.
