The Junior VEX Robotics Asia Open Finals were held in Xi'an from March 1 to March 4, 2023. The SCLS International Division Middle and High School VEX Robotics Club, led by Grade 10 student, Sophie Zheng, won First Runner-Up in the robotics skills competition and ranked second in the world in their very first trip after the pandemic. With their excellent engineering notes, the team members also won the Creativity Award in the same category. The Grade 6 group, despite being newcomers in this competition, successfully overcame challenges in the elimination round to win the "Vitality Award."
The VEX Robotics World Championship was founded in the United States by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation (RECF) and is supported by Carnegie Mellon University, the Future Foundation, NASA, the Einstein Alliance, and many other prestigious organizations and companies. The VEX Robotics Asian Open is the largest open robotics event in Asia, consisting of four categories and six divisions, spanning all ages from kindergarten to university. More than 300 teams come from all over the country to join this competition, with the total number of participants reaching over 2,000. In the middle school section, numerous representatives from prestigious schools have reached the finals, where they competed over a three-day period for awards such as teamwork and skill.

SCLSID students have been winning awards ever since our school first formed a team to compete in the VEX Asian Open in 2016. Thanks to the team culture of experienced members guiding the new ones, every individual of our robotic team has passed on their knowledge without any discontinuity over the past 7 years. Each successive team captain has selflessly poured all their hearts in training new members, helping them absorb information and preparing them for the challenges ahead in the shortest possible time.
In the evening before the “Skills” competition, in order to achieve the ideal results and earn the opportunity to travel to the United States for the World Championship, Sophie Zheng and her team stayed up until 3:00 AM to tackle the challenge and was the first to deliver a satisfactory answer. The next day, Sophie hand-checked every single component of their machine multiple times after the Grade 6 team successfully entered the elimination round. In the field, she watched the game from the sidelines with the sixth grade students, coaching her teammates with care and patience, just as her predecessors had nurtured her own growth. Her former captain, Grade 11’s Thomas Li, also cared greatly for the individual growth of every team member, constantly encouraging everyone to adjust their mindset in the competition, believing that every member is an indispensable component of the whole team. Their painstaking efforts have been rewarded. Every step Sophie Zheng took paved the way to her team’s eventual success, as she grew from a sixth-grader responsible for screw maintenance to the competent leader she is today.
Just as Sophie Zheng promised in the solemn oath she took as the student representative in the opening ceremony, the students of SCLSID MSHS vividly demonstrated the spirit of teamwork, displaying "fair competition, respect for opponents, courageous struggle, and united cooperation" with their excellent performance.
