Established in 2018, the Domestic Department High School (DDHS) of Shanghai Soong Ching Ling School inherited the aspiration of China Welfare Institute (CWI) and Soong Ching Ling School. With traditional Chinese culture as foundation, DDHS absorbed western education principles and practice and provided students with modern education in high quality. Upon the contract between SCLS and University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) signed in May 2018, the two institutions agreed to together develop the “UCLA Global Classroom” program.
University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) was an iconic public research-based college within the structure of University of California. In accordance with the 2022 ranking of all American universities studied by U.S. News, UCLA is on the 20th place overall and the 1st place on the public college list. UCLA Global Classroom was a collaborative global program under the initiative of UCLA international college, various academic departments, as well as the Department of International Development, to introduce their educational resources to targeted high schools.
SCLS DDHS is dedicated to cautiously integrate the core foundation of general Chinese education, the curriculum of SCLS, AP programs, and modules available from UCLA, offering students a global education that is suitable for Chinese students and has exclusive characteristics from SCLS.
The goal of our education:
To establish comprehensive education as our core, where we value both students' individual development and team spirit
To cultivate future talents rooted in Chinese culture with global vision and global competitiveness
To structure a careful academic environment where we combine primary and higher education
Our humanity subjects include Chinese Studies, History, Geography, Politics and so on. Our curriculum is strictly moderated in accordance with national standard and taught with national teaching materials.
Natural science subjects include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and so on. Curriculum will be appropriated in terms of the differences between students' interests and the factors such as the demand of such disciplines in the future. It will be taught in materials selected from relevant Chinese and international curriculum and in different appropriate levels.
English lessons taught by Chinese teaching staff with rich education experience will specifically target exams such as TOFEL and SAT. They will develop students' ability to use English language in terms of various aspects to assist them achieving satisfactory results in standard tests.
English lessons carried out by foreign teaching staff will include American and British literature as well as English academic writing. They will be carried out in English, and designed to help students understand western cultural context while as a necessary mean to improve their language ability.
DDHS has offered a number of AP subjects, including AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Computer Science, AP Psychology, AP World History, and AP English Language and Composition. Its structure and standard strictly follow relevant requirements from College Board and is conducted with required AP teaching materials. AP programs are taught in either both Chinese and English, or English exclusively, in a way that could help students achieve a comprehensive and logical knowledge structure, a meritorious academic quality as well as a good result in AP exams.
Modules introduced from UCLA will be established upon the basis of “UCLA Global Classroom” program. These modules are completely taught by UCLA Global Classroom professors personally, after which students will receive their transcripts upon finishing the modules successfully from UCLA DID. This transcript is recognized by 98% of American universities, from which the credits obtained could be converted in future degrees if students are to study in any American universities. Currently, DDHS UCLA Global Classroom has set up modules including Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Statistics, 19th Century American History, American Popular Culture, Natural Geography, Geographical Information System.
