Try your best and let it be

When I received the acceptance letter from Davidson College, I was grateful and delighted. Back when creating my school list, Davidson was the first option because it was most similar to SCLS where I have been cared for over the past 15 years. Although on two different continents, both campuses are filled with strong humanistic care, fully respect and include students, have sufficient academic resources, have modest, elegant, and pleasant environment, and even have similar climates.

When I first applied to Davidson, I was somewhat worried that I was not good enough and might waste this early decision opportunity. Although the application materials are complicated and heavy, and they require skills I’m not good at, I still decided to give it a shot.

Hi, Davidson, here I come!

Fortunately, the best-fit school also decided that I am a good fit for it as well. Looking back, this outcome can be considered reasonable. Before applying, you should first have a clear self-awareness, then create school selection criteria correspondingly, and select colleges based not simply on ranking but on how strong the match is between you and the school. Only after knowing and identifying the uniqueness of oneself can the application materials be prepared in a targeted manner.

Secondly, through various materials, I presented full aspects of myself to the school. Having multiple rounds of discussions with parents and teachers, I refined my three characteristics: curiosity and love of research, clear logic, and being persistent and thorough. I also integrated my three major hobbies: physics, computer science, and music, using the application materials to fully demonstrate my strengths. Davidson requires a variety of application materials. In addition to the standard suite, third-party interviews, additional documents, and recommendation letters from classmates are required. Each part of the application process requires the use of skills that I am not good at, which presented a big challenge to me. Fortunately, with my mother’s supervision and advice, my family members’ support, and Josh, the school counselor’s great help and guidance, I was able to successfully and fully present myself through the application materials.

It is through the multi-dimensioned application materials that I can fully express my true self, and through these "windows", show admissions officers my uniqueness and my possession of the skills and qualities that they value. I think that college cares not only about what you do, but more about who you are as a person that is revealed through those documents. The essence of applying is simply a process of organizing and presenting past experiences.

SCLS's "Love", nurturing my 15-year path

Mr.Benso和Ms.Cheung, 是6-8年级教我历史和科学的老师

对我呵护备至的还有Dr.Kramer和Ms.G。 Mrs.

My family and I are very grateful that we joined Soong Ching Ling's big family since kindergarten and continued this relation all the way to high school. I have unique personalities, but the tolerant and friendly environment of Soong Ching Ling School allows me to explore freely and grow confidently. Abundant teaching resources with ample care and guidance helped me to tap my potential and supported me to become a better person.

As early as kindergarten, my musical talent has been sensed by the teacher, and she recommended me to learn the piano. My love for science was also cherished, like when the teacher said to me encouragingly, "Promise me that you will come back and visit me when you become a scientist in the future." When I entered the primary school, I met an excellent homeroom teacher again - Ms. Zhang - who was always happy and enthusiastic. Under her encouragement, I read a lot of books, which significantly broadened my knowledge and greatly improved my cognitive abilities. I was also encouraged and recognized by my math teacher, Ms. Guo, giving me cognition of and confidence in my precise logic abilities. I grew up with the care of my teachers and classmates like this.

Entering the middle school, the principal, Dr. Magee, is wise, efficient and understanding. She is always caring, and she patiently and promptly responded to every one of my emails on a variety of topics. She always supported me in every way she could, especially when she approved the establishment of an AP Music Theory course because of me. This course allowed me to deeply study the music I love and enjoy the one-to-two "high-end, customized" teaching of Mr. McClure. When my mother was worried about my unique personality and hobbies, Dr. Magee told her that she believed I am gold and will shine wherever I go. These words deeply comforted and encouraged my mother.

Dr. Kramer and Ms. G also took great care of me. Dr. Kramer introduced the Assessment and Learning in E-Knowledge Space system, which provided me a platform to learn in the most suitable way for me and gave me an opportunity to be a math teaching assistant and help other students. She also encouraged me to participate in the Center for Gifted Teens summer camp to expand my interests and experiences. Particularly, her bring-your-own-device project helped me discover my interest in computers and embark on a journey to delve deeper into computers and optimize my workflow. Mrs. G recommended many good books for me and encouraged me to read. Her friendly smile always made me relax.

In addition, although the vice-principal Mr. Luo is extremely busy, she held the position of our homeroom teacher and insists on teaching our high school Chinese class all the way. With her encouragement and help, I am no longer afraid of Chinese. She takes great care in understanding and helping every student. For example, she arranged for me to participate and help in the IT department of our school. These opportunities allowed me to develop my strengths and make my own contributions. I also met many other excellent teachers in SCLS: Mr. Ewing, whose lectures are clear, efficient, and interesting and he happily answers my questions after class; Ms. Espanola, who is friendly, patient, and does her best to help me; Mr. Janko, who not only taught me math and music but also taught me how to be a nice person; and Mr. John Zhang, a gentle and kind math teacher that gave me personalized study plans. Every bit of effort paid by every single teacher in SCLS warmed my heart and contributed to my growth.

Love makes the world round.

All of this is inseparable from the "hidden hero", Madame Feng. She loves every student and starts our day by greeting us with her warm smile and big bow at the school gate every morning, regardless of rain or shine. Principal Feng strives to practice the concept of "giving the most precious things to children" with her words and deeds, and cares and respects the individualized growth of every student. Once, she offered me special tutoring for math competitions, but I turned down this opportunity on the basis that my regular math class at that time had sufficiently satisfied my needs. After attentively listening to my explanation, she not only understood my explanation but also appreciated my original opinion, and I felt fully respected. In this way, Principal Feng uses her great love to teach by words and deeds for every matter, and silently nurtures every teacher and student of Soong Ching Ling School, creating the unique "love" culture of Soong Ching Ling School.

In education, "love" is the most powerful drive. I am grateful for the love of Soong Ching Ling School that made me who I am today. In the future, I will pass on and carry forward this power to Davidson College. Love makes the world round.
