SCLSID MSHS Celebrates π Day 2023: Mathematics for Everyone!

Apr 12,2023

On March 14th, SCLSID Middle and High School celebrated the much anticipated π Day with the theme Mathematics for Everyone. Students across every grade and teachers across every department all joined in with enthusiasm.

π Posters Designed by Students

Math teachers have designed this year’s π activities with different flavors, echoing the theme that everyone can find some fun in math. These activities took place in four different classrooms. Let's have a look~

01

Left Brain Puzzle Train

In Left Brain Puzzle Train, students and teachers participated in competitive games such as Neighbors, Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe, NIM, and Math Sudoku. It was exciting to see some of our little Padawans winning against their masters!

Math Games Madness

The Math Games Madness (MGM) with Mr. Zhang and Mr. Appel was a room full of energy. Students were glued to Prime Climb, the classical Chinese game Huarong Road, 24 points, and more. The most popular of all was the scavenger hunt: nothing beats the joy of discovery!

Right Brain Creative Wave

The Right Brain Creative Wave allowed students to explore their artistic side by making π bracelets, spelling out the famous irrational number using colored conveyor belt digits, and showcasing their origami skills with Ms. Douma, Dr. Li Lin, and Dr. Dods.

π Discovery

The Pi Discovery room had students experimenting with Buffon's needle problem alongside Mr. Chen, and exploring an interactive simulation designed by Mr. Janko. It was a revelation when students found out it can be used to approximate π.

π Party

The fun did not stop in the classrooms. During the assembly, our own mad genius Mr. Appel (or was it Einstein?) hosted another series of contests in the theater.

The Rubik’s Cube challenge that kicked off the event got everyone cheering for their favorite contestant. In the final round, G6's Brayden Wong beat Mr. Nicky and earned a rare chance to pie him in the face, and he certainly took full advantage of it.

In Tower of Hanoi, the spectators witnessed an exciting match: Ms. Yacono vs. Ms. Shrader, and G6 Michael Zhang proved him the best of all.

In 8 out of 10 cats, three students (G6's Lydia Hou, Francis Tang, William Li) went up against the mighty Dr. Chen and Coach Fernandez. The teachers barely closed out the game with a 1-point advantage. We are doing things right in Pre-Algebra.

In the grand finale, the exciting pie-eating contest, G9's Louis Hao and G7's Tiger Yang finished ahead of everyone else, including Coach Jackson.

We wrapped up the celebration with a video compilation of Mr. Nicky interviewing teachers about their most embarrassing and most useful math moments. Students loved that they could relate to these stories!

π Day 2022 did not come to fruition due to a sudden lockdown, so it brings us a special kind of joy to be able to celebrate it with our students this year. This success was only possible with the huge amount of effort from all math teachers that went into preparation, along with the generous help from our dear colleagues, notably Dr. Weiting Chen, Dr. Lilian Puig, Ms. Jo Chen, Dr. Hao Xu, Mr. Josh Yager, Ms. G, Ms. He, and the IT team. Both the Middle School and High School Student Councils also contributed to the celebration. Many thanks to everyone, and we look forward to our reunion in the not-so-distant future.
