2023 Spring Variety Show
The most wonderful time of the year!
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s time to talk about the “hottest” event in town: our school’s recent variety show! Originally scheduled to be a cold Christmas show in December, Covid unfurled its powers of persuasion, and HSSC decided to postpone the show to February. Even after the winter holiday, students and teachers were excited to see the show, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was electric, the energy was contagious, and the performers were on fire, from new sixth-grade faces to older, seasoned performers. From start to finish, the show was a blast that had everyone in the audience cheering, clapping, and begging for more.
Our humorous hosts!
The show kicked off with a bang, as our hosts cracked jokes that had us rolling in the aisles. Then, the lights dimmed, and the stage came alive with the first magic show in the history of our variety show timeline. Michael Zhang (G6), the magician, mesmerized us with his deck of cards and his mind-bending tricks. He had us scratching our heads in confusion as he seemingly manipulated reality right before our very eyes. No one could figure out whether it was just a clever sleight of hand or a true display of “supernatural” power.
Excellent magician
Guess the Singer! Did you get it right?
What followed was a surprise for both students and teachers. Who knew our teachers could belt out a tune? There was only a little guessing involved in this Guess the Singer game, though, because our teachers’ voices were so unique that students were shouting out names from the very first note. When the teacher-singer identities were revealed, it was truly an unforgettable moment to see the shock and delight on everyone’s faces.

Remoter Band's performance brings us back to Christmas!
The show continued with eye-catching K-pop dances, breathtaking Chinese classical dance, a noteworthy piano solo, and head-banging rock band performances. Another never seen before highlight of the show came from an unexpected source: three ninth grade boys (affectionately dubbed “those goofy boys” by Mrs. G) who stormed the stage with a men’s group dance. Not the kind of dance to make the audience scream and swoon, but the kind of dance that caused shouting and jumping out of seats.

HSSC coordinating the show
The show wrapped up with an entertaining quiz segment. Instead of students wielding pens, we had teachers duke it out: Mr. Jackson and Coach Josh bickered over answers, while Ms. Shrader swept the board with her quirky knowledge. We celebrated our teachers’ achievement just like they celebrate ours: with a certificate that’s even prettier than our Honor Roll and Student of the Month awards. But, because we really do love them, we also gave them a ticket to Disneyland. We all love a good old theme park adventure!
Guess who's the winner?
Special parade
And among the joyful music, the humorous hosting, and loud applauses, the curtain closed on the first Variety Show of 2023.
